A contemporary painting that presents a whimsical depiction of a sloth suspended upside down from a gently curving tree branch , painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

The composition is pared back, allowing the single figure to become both the focal point and the emotional anchor of the work. Sparse foliage punctuates the scene, floating around the sloth like pauses in thought, reinforcing a sense of stillness and calm.

The style is deliberately simplified, with a subtle nod to folk art and modern naïve painting. Flattened forms and soft contours give the subject an emblematic rather than literal presence, while the sloth’s rounded body and elongated limbs create a gentle rhythm across the board, anchored by the horizontal branch.

A restrained, soothing palette of warm brown and taupe contrasts with a muted blue-grey background, accented by soft green leaves. Smooth, matte brushstrokes and a lightly textured surface enhance the contemplative mood of the piece.

This oil on board is housed in a black painted wood frame . Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
