Mid Century Modern slim pottery vase by Carstens Keramik from 1960. Very nice Carstens Keramik slender vase with waist. The decoration is of squiggly bands running from the waist down in a glossy blue-green and white glazes over a satin brown body. The inside of the vase has deep turquoise shiny glaze.
Measurements: 12 1/2 inches high x 4 inches diameter bottom x 3 5/8 inches diameter top.
Condition: Very Good. Minor wear consistent with age and use. No issues.
The Carstens factory was founded in 1878 by the Carstens family in what became Eastern Germany. They originally produced utilitarian wares and later expanded to decorative ceramics. During WWII, their factories were destroyed but after the War were rebuilt in West Germany. After the war the demand for dinnerware and kitchenware made them one of the top manufacturers of ceramics in West Germany by 1950. During the 60s their massive expansion of their overseas production caused financial trouble, the company went bankrup in 1977.
Today there is still a Carstens Keramik run by the Carstens family.
