Belgium / 1950 / Mirror by Deknudt / Resin / Baroque Revival
A commanding presence in any interior, this large-scale Baroque Revival mirror by Deknudt. Crafted in Belgium around 1950, embodies the theatrical elegance and ornamental richness of 17th-century design, reimagined through the lens of postwar decorative arts. Cast in gilded resin with remarkable detail, the frame features exuberant scrollwork, floral flourishes, and symmetrical cartouches that culminate in a sculptural crest, evoking the grandeur of Flemish and French Baroque traditions.
The frame’s surface gleams with a warm antique gold finish, accentuated by subtle patina and crisp relief work that mimics the depth and texture of hand-carved wood. Blue accents punctuate the design at key intervals, adding a regal contrast and enhancing the mirror’s visual rhythm. Its proportions are generous and balanced, allowing for both vertical and horizontal mounting, ideal for placement above a mantel, console, or in a grand hallway.
Affixed to the reverse is the original manufacturer’s label, a rare and authenticating detail that confirms its origin from Deknudt, one of Belgium’s most esteemed mirror ateliers. Founded in 1946, Deknudt quickly became known for its innovative use of resin and its commitment to quality, blending traditional aesthetics with modern materials to meet the stylistic demands of mid-century Europe.
This mirror is more than a decorative object, it is a sculptural statement, a reflection of postwar optimism and historical reverence, perfect for collectors, decorators, or hospitality settings seeking a touch of timeless drama.
