A charming and sculptural English Staffordshire figural piece depicting a standing gentleman beside a saddled horse at a trough, executed in traditional hand-painted enamels over a crackle-glazed earthenware body. The form incorporates a hollowed spill vase element to the rear, a common and desirable feature of mid-19th century Staffordshire figures, originally intended to hold fireplace spills or quills.
The palette—vivid ochre trousers, cobalt jacket, mottled green ground, and red saddle accents—is consistent with classic Victorian Staffordshire production. The modeling is naïve yet expressive, giving the piece strong decorative presence from multiple angles.
This example works exceptionally well styled on open shelving, in a library, or as a vignette accent, appealing to both collectors and decorators seeking authentic English pottery with narrative charm.

Why We Love It:
Equally at home in a traditional English interior or a layered, collected modern space—this piece reads as sculpture first, antique second.
