We acquired this beautiful chest from a stately apartment in the West Village of New York City. Adhering to the clean, straight lines of the Chippendale style, the design allows the wood to have the spotlight. The British reserved the best quality, old growth mahogany for their furniture, and it shows in this piece. The mahogany in the drawer faces and the top is mesmerizing!
Built in the mid-1700s, given the style and use of rose-head nails in the back, this chest has lived a long life full of stories. Along its journey, someone gave it antique handles from the same time period to bring it closer to it's original state. These handles are valuable in their own right, so ideally they would not be replaced and certainly not thrown away. Its relatively petite size means it can fit just about anywhere, adding the charm that can only come from being a living piece of history.
Since this chest is almost 300 years old, please read the condition details as it has some issues, which do not inhibit the function of the piece, but are worth knowing to make sure it is the right piece for you.

At some point in its life, someone cut the chest in half, presumably when it was shipped to the United States, and then reattached the two halves using dowels. Consequently, the top half can still lift off the bottom half and be placed back on. The major impacts are that the cut line is visible and if you are sliding the chest, you should take care to push from the bottom half. It is still a beautiful piece and can hold up to daily use, but it should be treated gently. Additionally, the top left drawer does not fully slide in as visible in the pictures. Finally, there are circular marks visible between the bail handles where single knob pulls used to be. The good news is that the drawers slide smoothly. If you didn't stop reading this note at "someone cut the chest in half", you are probably the right person to give this beautiful piece of history a home where it will be cared for and appreciated for the fullness of its story. less
