Elegant French-Inspired Transferware from Easthampton NY Estate - Museum Quality Serving Piece
Easthampton Estate Discovery - A Masterpiece of Continental Elegance
Acquired from a distinguished Easthampton, New York estate, this exceptional Mottahedeh covered tureen represents the finest American reproduction of historic European transferware. A dramatic study in contrasts, the rich golden yellow ground provides the perfect canvas for intricate black toile scenes rendered in the celebrated Creil Ware tradition.
Design & Artistry
The sophisticated Italian pastoral scenes encircle this elegant serving piece, depicting romantic continental landscapes in the meticulous transfer-printed technique that made Creil Ware legendary. Classical urn-shaped handles frame the composition, while the fitted lid completes this museum-quality example of decorative dining. Each detail speaks to Mottahedeh's unwavering commitment to historical accuracy and craftsmanship excellence.
The Creil Ware Legacy
This piece pays homage to one of France's most important ceramic manufacturers. The original Creil factory was established in 1794 along the Oise River during the tumultuous days of the French Revolution. Founded in Creil, France, the pottery quickly distinguished itself by producing fine earthenware that rivaled England's celebrated creamware.
By the early 19th century, Creil had mastered the transfer-printing technique pioneered by Staffordshire potters, creating distinctive black prints on cream or colored grounds. Their romantic pastoral scenes and classical motifs captured the essence of French taste and became highly prized throughout Europe and America. The factory's scenic patterns were particularly admired for their documentary quality and artistic merit.
In 1840, Creil merged with the Montereau pottery, continuing production as Creil et Montereau until 1895. Their pieces became treasured heirlooms, collected for their historical significance and timeless beauty—a tradition Mottahedeh honored through their meticulous reproductions.
