The primary purpose of such a piece remains unchanged since the nation’s founding, namely to provide a surface for serving food and beverages during a meal and to offer storage space for dining essentials such as linens, flatware, and serving dishes.
In its simplicity and proportion, the piece expresses 18th-century American elegance at its finest. Beautifully constructed in the late 20th-century by Baker Furniture in mahogany, this sideboard features five dove-tailed drawers, brass hardware and a lower shelf.
Noted for superb quality, Baker Furniture Company was founded in 1890 and is generally regarded as one of the nation’s premier furniture makers. Their status is underscored by the company being licensed to create furniture collections from Historic Williamsburg and Historic Charleston. Add to that the company's Stately Homes Collection, with its meticulous licensed furnishings from English, Scottish, Irish and Russian palaces and castles. Notably, a Baker Chippendale chair was inducted into the Smithsonian Museum's permanent collection in 1990.
