Wonderful piece of silversmith craftsmanship, this folding or "concertina" shaped … Read more Rare and unique, 19th Century Hallmarked Silver Campaign Toast Rack. Wonderful piece of silversmith craftsmanship, this folding or "concertina" shaped toast rack, would have been part of a mobile chest of serving ware used in one of two ways. Firstly, in Military, whereupon the Valet or Officer's gentleman would store it in a "campaign chest" with other tableware for the Officer. Secondly, it could have been used in a "Out of Africa" moment as shown in the famous movie, whereupon this was used in a mobile canteen for society when they were on safari in Africa.

This rack extends to 16" in length and holds 6 pieces of toast. when closed it measures 3 7/8" wide x 2 1/2" deep x 5 3/4"high. As you can see the silversmith riveted the concertina at each join, there are five balls rack stands on. The piece has English hallmarks, but some have faded over time from use. The essay office, would have stamped the markers mark which is shown by hand drawn description as shown - T.L.E.M. there is a crown but difficult even with a loop to define the essay markings.
