Its compact, powerful form, with its softly rounded armrests, lends the piece that characteristic presence that later led to its nickname, "elephant." here, hoffmann combines his clear, minimalist design language with an unusually organic modeling, giving the chair an almost architectural monumentality.

developed in collaboration with the wiener werkstätte and crafted with high-quality workmanship by jacob & josef kohn, this armchair type is also linked to specific interiors of the time. One documented example was used in the vienna medical club, suggesting its original use in a sophisticated, purpose-built space. The "elephant" armchair is thus one of those rare pieces of furniture that reflect both hoffmann's experimental exploration of new typologies and his close integration of furniture design and spatial concept.
