This piece is a reproduction on what appears to be clay with elaborate hand painted detailing. There is a metal stand on back and an indent at the top for hanging. It measures 7.5"Tall x 5.5"W. It measures 1/2" thick. There are some edge irregularities consistent with age. Exact provenance is not known. This is a vintage item from an estate of a well-traveled couple.


Story of "The Harpist's Stele"
The original piece was made as a funerary piece - a stone and wooden slab with was raised to honor a specific person (much like a modern tombstone.) In this case it honors the memory of the harpist Djedkhonsouioufankh shown on the right. Djedkhonsouioufankhis depicted here worshiping the god of the rising sun Ra-Horakhty - a combination of the Egyptian sun god Ra and the sky god Horus.
The funerary objective is intended to ensure the deceased's eternal worship in the afterlife. The famous original is housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. See less
