Gio Ponti (Italian, 1891–1979) for Richard-Ginori, Pittoria di Doccia
PERIOD: 1927
INSCRIBED: Verso: Richard-Ginori Pittoria di Doccia label; Richard Ginori mark dated 27=9 (September 1927); handwritten "Giopon" signature
In 1923, the young architect Gio Ponti was appointed creative director of Richard-Ginori with the objective of developing the firm's artistic output — a position he held for nearly a decade while concurrently establishing his architectural studio, providing a significant opportunity to develop and promote his ideas of uniting art and craftsmanship with industry. Ponti's designs for Richard-Ginori received the grand prize in the category of ceramics at the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925. The Alata pattern — small biplanes threading through soft cumulus clouds, rendered in the Italian national colors of red and green against white — is one of Ponti's most celebrated designs from this period, its subject matter reflecting the Italian fascination with aviation in the late 1920s.
