An Extremely Attractive And Rare Large Pair Of Early 19th Century, Regency Period, Paint Decorated And Parcel Gilded Pier Mirrors, Of Tall Rectangular Form, Incorporating Wonderful Naval Ship Scenes To Coloured Reverse Painted Verre Eglomise Mirror Glass, Over Replacement Large Mirror Plates Flanked By Elegant Half Turned Reeded Columns with Foliate Wrapped Decoration, Headed By Scrolling Carved Capitals.
This pair of early 19th century regency pier mirrors are a real treat to see. Rarely found still in pairs, especially when of this type of scale and proportion they are certainly an item which is not easy to come by.
Further to the fact they are something which is hard to come by they are also incredibly elegant, lovely quality and extremely well executed. The condition remains really good as well and despite the bottom mirror plates being old replacements they have a fabulous look to them. The elegance is of course rounded off by the well carved half turned columns with superbly carved little foliate wraps.
The term “Pier” mirror is generally used to describe an antique mirror whose proportions are relatively tall and narrow. As the name suggests this is because they were originally made to hang on the brick piers between the windows of a room.
As mentioned, overall they remain in good condition with just the expected old marks, scuffs, scrapes and repairs commensurate with an item of this age. Certainly there is nothing visually distracting, or disturbing in that respect. It is highly likely that the painted decoration has been sympathetically refreshed in the past, but this is not immediately obvious which is also nice.
Both of the beautiful verre églomisé panels to the top are original and particularly attractive. Verre églomisé was originally a French term referring to the process of applying both a design and gilding onto the rear face of glass to produce a mirror finish and nearly always adds a real touch of class and sophistication wherever it is used.
As with all items which we offer for sale this antique pair of mirrors have been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers to ensure they are ready for immediate placement within their new home.
