The inside-painted technique requires exceptional skill, executed with a thin, curved brush through the neck opening. Such bottles were intended for collectors, representing the pinnacle of chinese decorative art. The depicted subject, a dragon and a phoenix in flight, is highly symbolic in chinese iconography: they represent the harmonious union between masculine (yang) and feminine (yin), imperial power, and good fortune.
