In 1962 Warhol first debuted his soon to be infamous Soup Can paintings at The Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. Initially met with a critical response the artworks would shortly become iconic to The Pop Art Movement and defining work for the artist in his overall oeuvre. The screen printing process, approach and choice of subject matter revolutionized his art practice.
In 1965, in conjunction for his second ever museum exhibition at The ICA Boston, Warhol began to create Soup Cans in neon colors. he produced a limited number of silkscreen shopping bags with his beloved Campbell's Soup in bold neon anchored by the company logo in royal blue and grape purple. This shopping bag became the perfect symbol of the intersection between high culture and Pop Art, between consumerism and connoisseurship, and between scarcity and ubiquity.
