" Femme A La Montre " ( Woman With A Watch ) is arguably one of Picasso's most iconic and important Cubist masterpieces, a 1932 portrait of his muse Marie-Therese Walter. Painted at the pinnacle of Picasso's impassioned affair, the artwork exists as one of the most resolved and complex depictions from this highly charged year of his life. The rapturous period has been described as Picasso's Annus Mirabilis of " Year of Wonders ", an unapologetic expression of the artist's love and desire.
Pablo Picasso ( 1881 - 1973 ) was a Spanish born painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, poet and playwright who spent most of his life in France. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential artists of The Twentieth Century. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the most well known figures in 20th Century Art.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
This fine art lithograph poster is one of the most iconic and desirable of the collaboration and long lasting partnership between the artist Picasso and Atelier Mourlot who together would create many important art posters. An example of this same poster is held in the permanent archive collective of prestigious museums worldwide.
Beginning in the 1930's Fernand Mourlot invited the major master artists of the time into the lithography studio to learn the medium of printing together. Encouraging the artists to work directly on the lithography plates to create original prints and posters in limited editions. The results of this artistic collaboration between master artists and Mourlot became internationally known for their originality, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
When Ernst Beyeler renamed the Swiss art and book shop that he had running for several years to the " Galerie Beyeler " in 1952, he laid the foundation for a unique career as an art dealer and collector. The most important Modern artists were represented at Beyeler. The exhibitions were not only well attended by local visitors, but also by international travelers. The high level of curation and expertise that was cultivated in the Galerie Beyeler artworks, was also exemplified in their fine art exhibition posters of that time, such as this Pablo Picasso exhibition poster print.
The exquisite composition of " Femme A La Montre " is matched by an illustrious history dating back to Ernst Beyeler when he became captivated by Picasso's works in the 1950's befriending the artist. He was invited into Picasso's studio in 1966, and famously allowed to choose and purchase from his treasured paintings. This was not only an unparalleled gesture of friendship but also a very rare privilege. Among the legendary group of artworks Beyeler selected was " Femme A La Montre ".
The work was then briefly in the hands of Pace Gallery New York acquired in 1968 from Beyeler, it was then bought by art patron and philanthropist Emily Fisher Landau in that same year. It remained in her remarkable collection until her death in 2023 at the age of 102, when the painting sold at auction by Sotheby's in New York City for 139 million, making it the 2nd most expensive painting ever sold by Picasso. It is among the most unique renderings of Picasso's companion, muse and lover Marie-Therese Walter, and remains a tour de force of Picasso's overall oeuvre, and one of the finest examples of his portraiture ever created.
