Peter Max (American, b. 1937) “Cosmic Runner” (also known as Cosmic Flyer), hand-signed mixed media work from the artist’s iconic Cosmic series. The composition features a dynamic figure moving through clouds against radiating sun rays, rendered in saturated color fields characteristic of Max’s psychedelic Pop Art period rooted in the 1960s counterculture era.
The base image is an offset lithograph that has been extensively hand-embellished with acrylic paint, including bold painted borders in blue and green that extend beyond the printed image. Signed by the artist in red within the border.
The artwork is framed with a multi-layered matting system. A wide linen-wrapped mat forms the primary border, providing a textured finish. Within the opening, a secondary inner mat creates a narrow contrasting reveal in a dark tone, and a gold-tone fillet is set into the mat assembly, creating a refined transition between the artwork and the linen mat.
