A handsome pair of European brass lion bookends executed in the neoclassical tradition and inspired by the work of Antonio Canova (1757–1822). Each reclining lion is finely modeled with strong anatomical detail and expressive character, mounted on a solid rectangular base.
Both bookends bear the Canova attribution, confirming these as decorative works made after the renowned sculptor—typical of late 19th to early 20th century Grand Tour–inspired objects created to evoke classical ideals of strength, balance, and permanence.
The brass surfaces display a worn, unrefined patina, with visible age-related surface wear that enhances their authenticity and sculptural depth. These bookends are substantial enough for practical use while remaining highly decorative.
Ideal for a traditional library, English-style study, or as a grounding classical element within an eclectic interior.
