The Plate measures approximately … Read more American Historical Scene in Blue Transferware on White Ceramic Plate originating in Staffordshire England Circa 1908. The Plate measures approximately 10.5" across. The American imagery is stunning. The plate commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the Orphan Asylum Society of the City of Brooklyn ( yes, that Brooklyn which was once a City of its own right but is now a Borough of New York City).. Features a central image of the Asylum Building celebrating its 75th year of existence (1833-1908). A banner of celebration appears at the bottom central rim of the plate. Below that, is the Seal of the City of Brooklyn, a Goddess weilding an Ax, who knew). And what a spooky and slightly less than thoughtful image to pair the Goddess and ax below with a hoard of orphaned children above, dutifully standing for their photo. The kids alone, are distinct, and adding the ax wielding Goddess is maybe a bit much?

There is an inscription in blue on back, appropriately dedicating the plate and detailing its origin. Two impressed marks also appears on rear, one being a Copeland Makers Mark and the other holding details of the plate's production. Overall this is a stunning example of American Historical Theme on English Staffordshire pottery.

Excellent condition and highly collectible.
