Marco Sassone:
Marco Sassone studied in his native city of Florence, Italy. The most poignant and enduring influences can be traced back to his studies in the 1960s with Florentine painter Silvio Loffredo. Loffredo painted directly under the teaching of Oskar Kokoschka. The agitated brushstrokes and vibrant color appealed to Sassone, offering the young artist a foundation that has remained throughout his career. Sassone found liberation in the methods, absorbed them, personalized them. He has spent 30 years developing his distinctive style, and refining it to its maturity. This current body of work focuses on
landscapes from southern Italy, namely those found in the rugged seaboard of the Amalfi Coast. As a child, Sassone was introduced to this region during a trip with his father, painter Nicola Sassone, who grew up in Naples. At the age of 20, Marco Sassone returned to the southern coast to carry out one year of his service in the Italian military. "As far as I am concerned, its extraordinary beauty transcends every possible description," the artist explains. "I spent all of my free time exploring Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, and all of the other local, small villages dispersed on the Amalfi Coast." Upon the completion of his service, the verdant landscapes frequently found their way onto Sassone's canvases and panels.
Sassone returned to the Amalfi Coast this year. The lush scenery sparked a desire to produce a series focusing on this subject matter of his youth. The small format allows Sassone to depict what he has dubbed "moment inspirations," while retaining the same rich quality and engaging techniques characteristic of his large canvases.
Marco Sassone currently lives in San Francisco. His work has been presented in many one-person exhibitions including those at: Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery; Bernheim-Jeune Gallery, Paris; the Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach, California; the Cloisters of Santa Croce, Florence, Italy; Bushlen Mowatt Gallery, Vancouver, Canada; and the Museo Italo-Americano, San Francisco. In February of 1998, Sassone completed and inaugurated a 200-square-foot mural commissioned by the acclaimed downtown San Francisco restaurant, Palio d'Asti.
