This beautifully crafted carved wood settee dates to the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1910, and has been newly recovered in a rich navy blue cut velvet, giving it a fresh, luxurious look while preserving its antique character. The gently arched back is crowned with finely detailed carving in the form of a tied ribbon, wreath, and flowing garlands, a classical Neoclassical / Louis XVI–inspired motif that adds elegance and sculptural interest. The warm-toned wood frame features turned, tapered legs and carved detailing along the apron and crest rail, showcasing the quality and refinement of late 19th-century craftsmanship.
Several details of the frame point to its early construction rather than later factory production. The ribbon-and-garland carving is deeply cut and subtly asymmetrical, consistent with hand-carved work rather than fully machine-milled ornament. The turned legs and curved back rails show slight variation in profile, another sign of hand shaping instead of identical, mass-produced components. Of particular interest are the small round wooden pegs and decorative “button” elements visible at key joints along the arms, back supports, and apron. These are hand-set dowels and carved rosettes used both structurally and decoratively, a traditional furniture-making technique of the late 1800s that predates standardized machine fasteners and modern CNC carving. Their slightly irregular form and softened edges reflect age and hand finishing, adding to the authenticity and character of the piece.
The settee has been newly upholstered in a plush navy blue cut velvet that catches the light beautifully, creating subtle tonal variation and depth. Matching trim outlines each upholstered panel and the seat, giving the piece a tailored, couture-like finish. The loose seat cushion is removable and features a down-filled top with a padded interior, offering both comfort and support. With its slimmer depth and refined proportions, this settee has a narrower footprint than many sofas, making it an excellent choice for an entryway, hallway, or at the foot of a bed, where you want elegance and presence without overwhelming the space. It also works beautifully in a living room or dressing area as a sculptural accent piece.
The combination of an antique carved wood frame and fresh, luxurious upholstery creates a striking contrast that feels both timeless and current.

The settee has been newly upholstered and a new loose seat cushion has been custom made, as the original cushion was no longer present. The antique wood frame is structurally sound and stable for normal residential use. As with any piece of this age, it should be enjoyed as fine antique furniture rather than subjected to heavy or overly vigorous use. The wood shows age-appropriate wear throughout, including small surface marks, patina, and minor imperfections to the legs and frame, all consistent with a piece dating to the late 19th / early 20th century and contributing to its authentic character. The carved wood rosettes on the back supports are later replacements, while the rosettes on the front and sides are original to the piece. The replacements are well matched in scale and tone and integrate harmoniously with the original carving. less
