An impressive antique Japanese zakuri, a hand-operated reel traditionally used to unwind fine silk filaments from cocoons and collect them onto bobbins or reels. Dating from the Meiji period, this example is constructed from cryptomeria wood and bamboo.
The large open wheel is operated by a wooden handle and connected to a visible mechanism of wooden gears. Its radial spokes, structural joints and separate wooden components give the piece a distinctly architectural and almost sculptural appearance. Zakuri machines were used from the late Edo period and throughout the Meiji era within small-scale Japanese silk production.
During silk reeling, the ends of the extremely fine filaments from several cocoons were gathered together and wound onto a rotating frame. The resulting raw silk could then be processed into yarn for valuable Japanese textiles, including fabrics used for kimono.
Years of use have given the wood a deep and warm patina. Visible wear, discolouration, minor losses and traces of its original working life contribute greatly to the authentic character of this historic tool.
Today, the zakuri makes an exceptional decorative object for a spacious interior, shop, gallery, textile studio or collection of Japanese folk art. When illuminated from the side, the large wheel, radial spokes and gear mechanism cast striking graphic shadows across the surrounding walls.
In attractive antique condition, with clear signs of age and use consistent with its period and original function. The various accompanying wooden components are included with the main object.
A rare and monumental example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, combining function, engineering and sculptural beauty.
