This exceptional American sterling silver trophy, dated August 21, 1915, is a striking example of early 20th-century sporting silver and fine craftsmanship. Executed in solid sterling silver and weighing an impressive 472 grams, the trophy has a commanding presence, both visually and historically.
The cup is distinguished by a raised high-relief emblem of a Native American Indian profile, finely modeled with strong sculptural depth and crisp detail. The emblem lends the piece a bold, emblematic character typical of prestigious athletic awards of the period. The front of the trophy is finely engraved:
“M.G.C. Second Eight Men’s Championship
August 21, 1915
Ralph Segar”
The reference to a “Second Eight” identifies this trophy as an award associated with men’s rowing, specifically recognizing a second varsity eight-oared crew—terminology standard in competitive rowing during the early 20th century.
The trophy is clearly stamped Gorham and marked “Sterling,” confirming its manufacture in solid silver rather than silver plate. It measures approximately 9.25 inches high, 9 inches wide, and 5 inches deep, giving it a balanced yet substantial architectural form well-suited for display. Good antique condition, areas of tarnish, a few small indents, slightly uneven base. Please review the photos for further condition assessment
About Gorham
Founded in 1831 in Providence, Rhode Island, Gorham Manufacturing Company became the preeminent American silversmith of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Gorham was renowned for supplying elite presentation silver, including trophies, civic awards, and ceremonial pieces for athletic clubs, universities, and national institutions. Their work is celebrated for its quality of silver, refined engraving, and enduring design, and Gorham pieces remain highly sought after by collectors today.
Together, the date, maker, rowing-specific inscription, and weighty sterling construction make this trophy a compelling artifact of American sporting culture—an authentic and impressive survivor from the golden age of competitive club athletics.
