Tommaso Barbi “Conchiglia” (Shell) Floor Lamp, Italy, circa 1970
Bottega Gadda
Designed by renowned Italian designer Tommaso Barbi and produced by Bottega Gadda in the early 1970s, the iconic Conchiglia (Shell) floor lamp is a striking example of sculptural Italian lighting from the late mid-century period. Executed in brass, the lamp features a dramatic clam shell form mounted on a slender, organically curved stem and cuved base.
The generously scaled shell—approximately 24 inches high and 20 inches wide—is backlit by a single standard bulb, giving off a soft, atmospheric glow that accentuates the shell’s dimensional contours and reflective surface. The lamp stands an impressive 67.5 inches tall, giving it a strong presence while remaining elegant and refined.
Balancing natural inspiration with modernist craftsmanship, this piece functions as both illumination and sculpture.

The lamp is in good vintage condition and is structurally sound. The brass surface presents with an attractive, naturally developed patina consistent with age, along with areas of surface pitting, most noticeable toward the base. The brass could be professionally polished to a higher shine if desired; however, it has been left in its current state, as many collectors prefer the character and warmth of the patina. The lamp retains its original wiring and is currently functional (the light turns on). Due to age, the wiring shows visible wear, fraying and damage, and the cord length is relatively short for a floor lamp. As such, rewiring is recommended prior to regular use. Please note: we are not licensed electricians, and the lamp has not been inspected or certified by a licensed electrician or other electrical professional. Electrical components should be evaluated and updated by a qualified professional to meet current safety standards. This piece is sold as a vintage lighting object, and any electrical work should be undertaken at the buyer’s discretion.
