A cast-iron trivet in ōgi-gata (fan shape), beautifully finished with crisp relief details. The surface features a turtle (kame) and a stylised line/cord motif. In Japan, the turtle is a classic symbol of good fortune and longevity, fitting the visual language often seen in tea culture and everyday household objects.
Dimensions: height 1 cm, width 17 cm, depth 15 cm.
Thanks to its weight and small feet, this piece is ideal for placing a hot tetsubin/teapot, nabe, or cooking pot safely on the table. Trivets like these were traditionally used to protect tabletops from heat, while also serving as a compact decorative object that can simply be left out.
The purple cords with tassels add an extra decorative, almost ceremonial touch, while the object remains above all highly functional. The handle bears a cast maker’s mark/signature in kanji: Iwachu, known for Nanbu ironwork.
Modern use: as a trivet for a teapot, casserole dish, or serving bowl, or as a bold accent on a coffee table. Elegant in shape, practical to use, and finished with a deep, dark patina that gives the cast iron even more character.
