This early 20th century footstool is upholstered in a richly colored European floral needlepoint, worked on imported canvas with a red selvage stripe along the edge — a detail commonly found on French and English needlework canvas from the interwar period. Faint printed mill markings are still visible on the reverse, further supporting that the canvas itself is European and from the early part of the 20th century.
The needlepoint features delicate roses, scrolling vines, and soft pastel florals on a deep wine-red ground. The wool stitching is clean, intact, and tightly worked, giving the surface a warm, authentic vintage look with beautiful depth of color.
The wooden footstool frame shows clear signs of age and use. The original shellac finish has areas of chipping, wear, and scratching, with scattered dents and surface bruising to the legs and frame. These imperfections are consistent with a piece from the 1920s through late 1930s and give the stool the kind of character that only comes from decades of use.
At some point in the mid-20th century, the stool was reinforced underneath with Phillips screws and staples to keep it sturdy — a practical period repair that allowed the original frame and needlepoint to continue being used rather than replaced.
This is a charming and authentic decorative piece, perfect as a footstool, vanity stool, or accent for a chair or bed.
