Victorian Still Life Oil Painting by Oliver Clare – Blossom Flowers & Bird Nest, c.1880
Overview
A refined late Victorian still life attributed to the celebrated British painter Oliver Clare (1853–1927), depicting luminous white and blush blossoms set against a richly textured mossy ground. At the lower right, a finely rendered bird’s nest cradles four blue eggs, adding an intimate narrative detail. Oil on canvas, signed, and presented in an ornate giltwood Victorian frame.
Subject & Medium
Subject: Late Victorian still life of blossoms over moss, with bird’s nest and four blue eggs at lower right
Medium: Oil on canvas
Date: Circa 1880 (late 19th century)
Title: Still Life of Blossom & Bird’s Nest
Composition & Technique
This painting is an elegant meditation on nature, executed with a high level of finesse. The composition is anchored by a blooming cluster of white, hawthorn-like flowers accented by rosy-pink blossoms, set against a deeply layered green ground that creates strong contrast and depth.
Clare’s handling is notable for its minute detailing and controlled finish, particularly in the moss textures, petals, and the nest’s woven structure. The four blue eggs create a subtle focal counterpoint—quietly vivid against the earthy greens and browns—enhancing the sense of realism and tenderness that collectors associate with Clare’s best work.
