Jacques Louis David ( 1748 - 1825 ) was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780's, his cerebral oeuvre of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward Classical austerity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of The Ancein Regime. David was the strongest influence in French Art of The Early 19th Century, especially academic salon painting. Artworks by David are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
Among his most famous masterpieces " Les Sabines ", tells the story of The Sabine Women enforcing peace between combatants. It shows a legendary episode following the abduction of The Sabine Women by the founding generation of Rome. It is said to have been painted in honor of his wife, with the theme being love prevailing over conflict. The painting was also seen as a plea for the people to reunite after the bloodshed of The French Revolution.
The painting depicts Romulus's wife Hersilia - the daughter of Titus and Tatius, leader of The Sabines as the central figure and subject of the painting. A detail of Hersilia is featured in the rare lithographic fine art poster. In Roman Mythology, Hersilia was a figure in the foundation myth of Rome. She is credited with ending the war between Rome and The Sabines.
