Madame Elsabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun ( 1755 - 1842 ) was a French painter who specialized in portrait painting, in the Late 18th and Early 19th Centuries. Her artistic style is considered part of the aftermath of Rococo with elements of an adopted Neoclassical style. Her subject matter and color palette are aligned with both Rococo and Neoclassicism. Vigee Le Brun created a name for herself in Ancien Regime society by serving as the portrait painter to Marie Antionette. She enjoyed the patronage of aristocrats, actors, and writers, and was elected to art academies in ten cities.
Le Brun was viewed by many as one of the greatest portraitists of her time, comparing her with The Old Dutch Masters. In addition to works in private collections, her paintings are held in the collections of many of the world's museums including The Louvre Paris, Hermitage Museum Saint Petersburg, National Gallery London, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York.
Marie Antionette ( 1755 - 1793 ) was the last Queen of France before the fall of the monarchy during The French Revolution. She was the wife of King Louis XVI. As queen, she became increasingly a target of criticism by opponents of the foreign and domestic policies of the king and those opposed to the monarchy in general. During the revolution the country's financial crisis was blamed on her lavish spending and her opposition to social and financial reforms. She and her husband were imprisoned when France was declared a republic and the monarchy was abolished. After revolutionary tribunal, both Louis XVI and Marie Antionette were executed by guillotine in 1793.
In 1955, The Musee Chateau De Versailles presented a major exhibition titled " Marie-Antionette, Archiduchesse, Dauphine Et Reine ", showcasing her life and era through art, furniture, and personal items, providing a significant look at her public and private world. The event focused on The Queen's personal taste and extravagant lifestyle she created while living at the peak of The Versailles Palace.
