Set of 9 Art Nouveau Citrine Glass Demitasse Cups and Saucers with Gilt Enamel, circa 1900 (18 Pieces Consisting of 9 Cups and 9 Saucers)
A refined set of nine Art Nouveau demitasse cups with matching saucers, dating to the turn of the 20th century. Each cup is crafted from thinly blown citrine-colored glass, its warm amber tone catching the light with jewel-like brilliance. The surfaces are richly decorated with hand-applied gilt enamel, forming sinuous whiplash scrolls, tendrils, and stylized blossoms, emblematic of the Art Nouveau aesthetic. The gilt lines, slightly raised to the touch, were fired onto the glass to achieve permanence and retain their luminous sheen.
While unsigned, the aesthetic belongs firmly to the Vienna Secession and Wiener Werkstätte milieu, recalling the decorative vocabulary of Koloman Moser (1868–1918), co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte. The bold yet fluid gilt ornamentation reflects the transition from naturalistic Art Nouveau to the more abstract and geometric modernism that Moser and his circle helped to pioneer. Comparable gilt-enamelled services were produced by leading Bohemian workshops such as Moser Karlsbad and Meyr’s Neffe, whose glasshouses often realized designs for the Viennese avant-garde.
The cups are finished with delicate applied glass handles, carefully pulled and tooled by hand, while both rims and saucers are banded in gold, completing the elegant design. The saucers measure 4 inches in diameter, while the cups stand 2.5 inches high by 2.5 inches wide (3 inches across with handle) for a total of 18 pieces. Consisting of 9 cups and 9 saucers.
Amber glass, with its association with vitality and conviviality, made this service particularly suited for after-dinner rituals. These demitasse cups would have been used for serving espresso, Turkish coffee, or cordials in a refined Belle Époque or Jugendstil interior. Today, they remain ideal for intimate entertaining or as a collector’s display of fin-de-siècle glass artistry.
