Early 19th-century Danish pine chest of five drawers retaining its original brick red painted finish. The chest is constructed in two sections and features turned black painted columns, a scalloped skirt, and black beaded detailing along the crown, all characteristic of country Biedermeier design. While Biedermeier furniture is often associated with glossy yellow and black finishes, this pine example reflects a rural interpretation of the style.
Faint original stenciling remains visible along the top central drawer and to the left and right of the brass pulls along lower drawers, adding to the authenticity and rarity of the piece. Each of the four larger drawers is fitted with two large brass pulls, while the top drawer opens using a skeleton key as a pull only.
Expected age-related wear includes cracks, scratches, nicks along the sides and front, and staining across the top surface, all reflective of long use. Distress to the painted finish seen throughout.
Restored, strong, and stable, this exceptional European country chest is ready for use and stands as a beautiful example of original European country furniture.
