Victorian Windsor stickback kitchen chair.
This style is a type of Windsor chair, a design that originated in England in the early 18th century and is characterised by its solid wooden seat into which the legs and spindles of the back are inserted.
These chairs were initially used as outdoor furniture in gardens and were often painted green to blend in with the environment. Later, they became popular for indoor use, particularly in kitchens and dining rooms.
The seat is a single piece of wood elm, which is resistant to splitting and is carved into a comfortable, curved or "saddle" shape.
A series of thin wooden spindles form the backrest, which are wedged into drilled holes in the seat.
The legs and stretchers are also turned, a process of shaping wood on a lathe.
The design became a staple of country furniture due to its durability and simple construction. The style has been adapted over centuries and continues to be popular in both antique and modern forms.
