Beautiful and important oil painting on glass based on an engraving dated 1655 at the bottom centre, follower of Leandro Bassano.

This is probably a private devotional painting depicting the Crucifixion, rendered with accents of rare intensity and depth intended for reflection and meditation.
The painting shows Christ crucified, with the Virgin Mary and St John the Evangelist at his sides, and other mourning figures beneath the cross.
The iconography of the Crucifixion is a central symbol of the Christian religion and sacred art.
The skull at the base of the cross represents Golgotha, the place of crucifixion, while the red planet in the upper right corner is a very rare iconographic subject.

This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important private collection



Leandro Dal Ponte, known as Bassano (Bassano del Grappa, 10 June 1557 - Venice, 15 April 1622), was an Italian painter.
The fourth son of Jacopo Bassano, he was trained in the family workshop, often working in his hometown during his early years. Having already gained considerable fame as a portraitist, after the death of his father and brother Francesco, he decided to settle in Venice in 1592, where he first set about completing the works left unfinished by his brother. At the same time, he was commissioned to work on the decoration of the Doge's Palace.
Although his style was strongly based on his father's late manner, especially as a portraitist, he showed a certain influence from Tintoretto with a predilection for line. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
