Rare circa 1800s Painted Japanese Byobu (folding screen) depicting "Watanabe Moritsuna Crest", Busho (military commander or warrior Lord) who used this crest. This crest also was/is used by Watanabe and Watabe Clans. The three stars (black dots) symbolize God of War and the line below is a symbol of victory (Mitsu boshi ni ichimonji mon - One line and three stars).
This rare and fascinating piece of Samurai Art comes from a temple in Japan. Museum quality. Perfect for display of katana (Japanese sword).
Gouache and ink on paper, gold pigment on silk at the upper area of the screen. Lacquered black wood frame with reticulated metal corners. Silk over paper on back. Professional restoration was done on this byobu sometime during Showa Era (circa mid of the 20th century): gold paper liners were added to joints between the panels; possibly paper loops with printed design were attached to the flag during restoration; the metal corners were added to the frame; touch-ups on the painting. Japan, Edo Era, circa 1800s.
