The composition is dominated by the wide expanse of the river in the foreground, rendered with finely spaced horizontal lines that emphasize calm movement and depth. On the opposite bank, palm groves, low buildings, and minarets define the silhouette of Cairo, while small boats and figures along the riverbank animate the scene without disturbing its balance. The plate originates from Frederik Ludvig Norden’s Voyage d’Égypte et de Nubie, first published in Copenhagen in 1755. Norden was a Danish naval officer and trained draughtsman whose work marks a turning point in European representations of Egypt. Unlike earlier imaginative or symbolic depictions, his engravings are based on direct observation and measured drawing, offering an unusually accurate view of Egypt’s landscape, architecture, and daily life along the Nile. The inclusion of a pyramid “à perte de vue” (fading into the distance) is especially compelling, linking the living city of Cairo with Egypt’s ancient past in a single, restrained image. The result is a serene and timeless composition that appeals both to collectors of early Egypt travel imagery and to interior designers seeking large, horizontal works with historical gravitas and a neutral palette. Condition report: Good antique condition. Light age toning and faint scattered spotting consistent with 18th-century paper. Full plate mark visible. Margins intact. No tears, losses, or restoration observed. Framing tips: Best framed with a wide off-white or light parchment mat to emphasize the plate mark and panoramic scale. Dark walnut, ebonized wood, or softly patinated black frames work particularly well.
