additional information:
marcel kammerer studied under otto wagner at the vienna academy of fine arts from 1898 to 1901. Kammerer studied at the academy of fine arts in vienna and, after graduating, joined his teacher's architectural firm, where he worked from 1902 to 1910. During this formative period, kammerer was involved in two of the firm's most important projects: the editorial offices of the newspaper die zeit and the austrian postal savings bank. Both buildings incorporated bentwood furniture designed by wagner and exemplify his modern understanding of form, function, and material.
this close professional and design connection between teacher and student is particularly evident in the present side table. Its strict geometry and structural clarity directly follow otto wagner's design principles. The formal similarity to a side table designed by wagner for the postal savings bank, which exhibits an almost identical design language, is especially striking. During his time in wagner's studio, kammerer also designed several of his own bentwood models for gebrüder thonet, thus consistently applying his teacher's architectural ideas to furniture design.
a luxurious version of this model with aluminum fittings is also known. Due to its elaborate and undoubtedly costly details, this variant
never went into mass production and is known to exist in only two examples today. The side table thus represents a rare and significant testament to the wagner school and documents kammerer's central role in the further development of modern viennese furniture design.
regarding the armchairs:
model no. 6516, which wagner designed for the austrian postal savings bank and which was produced by the thonet brothers from 1905 onwards, is an exemplary work of viennese modernism. In his "utilitarian style," wagner combined clear lines with functional, industrially influenced elements, such as the characteristic aluminum embellishments. At the same time, he used different material finishes to structure social hierarchies within the bank. Later, the chair was incorporated into the regular thonet product line and remained available in various versions. This piece has an attribution mark,
