This incredible antique mahogany carved mirror is a fascinating example of maritime folk art, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Its style is characteristic of the Victorian Revival period, where woodworkers combined realistic nautical details with mythical elements.
The mirror features a hand carved heavy mahogany solid wood frame with and incredible amount of heavily detailed 3 dimensional carvings. The carvings tell a fantastical story of seafaring life and the superstitions that protected sailors.
The Mermaid: In the 19th century, the mermaid was the most popular ship figurehead. Sailors believed a female figure could "shame" a turbulent sea into being calm, acting as a talisman for fair weather.
Neptune: ruled the sea and controlled storms, earthquakes and oceans.
The Ship's Prow: The vertical sides of the frame mimic the bow of a sailing vessel. The
"slicing" design was meant to represent the ship guiding souls safely to shore.
The Cherub (Putti): Common in Victorian decor, these often represented Aeolus (the god of wind), symbolically providing the "breath" to fill the sails of the ships carved below them.
The entire frame as you can see is full of beautifully carved mystical figures and so much more.
The mirror I believe to be original as well as the wood backing.
It's an incredible piece of maritime history and a stunning mirror for a home over a mantle as well as a yacht.

The frame had a few small repairs. The trident was replaced as the original was missing. There were a couple of chips on a few points which were sanded and stained. They are not noticeable. One point at the top was repaired as well as shown in the photo's. The mirror itself is in very good condition. The back has a few small screw holes from mirror hangers. The hangers are not present. I can add some if you like or give you a pair to place on the mirror yourself. This way you can add them exactly where you need them. less
