Born in Budapest, Andre Kormendi (1906-1971) moved to the US in 1937, a year before this print was created. He enlisted in the US Army during WWII and afterwards Sgt Kormendi was one of the Monuments Men. His group was responsible for returning the Imperial Crown Jewels from Nuremberg to Vienna in January 1946, the Krakow Altarpiece to Poland in May 1946, and the Neptune Fountain to Russia in October 1947.
