a stunning pair of majolica tiles, signed on the back by the "ama pesaro" factory, depicting marine subjects, airbrushed and attributed to elso sora, one of the factory's founders and leading figures, dating between 1950 and 1970. This artist was commissioned by giò ponti to collaborate with richard ginori to create several objects. The two tiles featured are of the highest artistic quality, with rich, lead-rich glazes and strongly echoing ponti's style with stylized subjects with a deco feel, a departure from the usual ama pesaro production. Furthermore, the fish featured on one of the two tiles is a decoration by elso sora; in fact, through our online searches, we found a vase decorated by elso sora with the exact same fish featured on our tile. For these reasons, we can easily attribute their authorship to this renowned artist.

in our online searches, we found several ceramic pieces by the artist, all listed at considerable prices. We found an incomplete set, listed for €1,000 on the "mercanteinfiera" website, titled "elso sora hand-decorated ceramic tea set." we then found a small vase, also signed "ama pesaro" and attributed to elso sora, with the exact same fish depicted on one of the two tiles, listed for €500-1,000 at gregory's auction house, in auction 52 titled "summer design" on june 8, 2022, lot 24 titled "a.m.a. Manufacture based on a design by elso sora, ceramic vase, pesaro, 1950s/1960s." finally, we found another vase listed for €400-600 at capitolium art in turin, italy, at auction 275 titled "murano glass and ceramics," lot 193 titled "elso sora (1917-1991) decorated ceramic vase for a.m.a. 1950s. Signature on the base." please note that these are all starting prices, prices that could always rise during the auction, and the final result always includes a 25-30% buyer's premium.

information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
the manufacturer "a.m.a." (artigiani maiolicari associati) was founded in 1950 by siblings elso, luisa, and nemorino sora, along with ceramist franco ridolfi and painter vittorio benvenuti, in pesaro. After elso sora's death in 1991, the factory was continued by his son claudio. After achieving significant artistic success, elso sora participated in an exhibition in monza in 1930 and was appreciated by giò ponti, who, a few years later, invited him to work at the richard-ginori factory in sesto fiorentino, with whom he collaborated for several years.
