The covers have plum shape ferrules decorated with a polychrome flower on top. The cap below is decorated with an ornate spray of branching, polychrome flowers amid a rock garden and a pair of Chinese rose finches on one side and a simpler spray of flowers on the other side of the cap. The wide rim is decorated with a lattice of green, blue and tan tiles with red and yellow floral medallions quartered within and bracketed by double red trim lines. The underside of the rim is glazed in a light greenish-white. Four floral sprays are quartered around the short neck of the vase and bracketed by double red trim lines. The main decoration of the vase consists of polychrome groupings of a Chinese extended family within a walled rock garden next to their home, near a riverbank amid pets, chickens, pines, bamboo and flowering shrubs The lower vase, just above the plain extended foot, is accented with a band of repeating yellow, red, and blue bars on a turquoise ground. Blue, Shen De Tang Bo Gu Zhi, place marks are glazed to the inset bases. The finely carved, traditional. Chinese, hongmu stands are included. Circa Republic of China era.

Shen De Tang Bo Gu Zhi: Made in the Antique Style for the Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue. Located in the Old Summer Palace or Garden of Perfect Brightness just northwest of the Forbidden City. Used as a daily residence by the Daoguang Emperor, who died there. It was destroyed by European troops during the 2nd Opium War in 1860.
