Circa 1740 Chinese porcelain pair of famille rose Armorial soup plates. Qianlong dynasty. From the Rig (Rigg) family service (Rigsland in Scotland). An example of these superb plates is in Howard, Vol.II, color plate G3, p.187 with a fascinating discussion of the likely history. A complicated armorial history is included & the crest/motto noted: "A Cocksable beaked and armed fules, and motto 'Virtute et labore'". Minor rim frits.
