Stunning 1860s English lap desk, presented in Burlewood with brass accents. The the rectangular box opens to a sloped writing box. Once open, there is a leather writing surface with storage compartments at the top of the slope. In one storage compartment and glass inkwell remains. We did not know if it’s original, but it was found with the box and we are keeping it that way. each half of the sloped writing surface lifts to reveal storage compartment. The top leather section opens to reveal three tiny drawers with cotton thread pulls. One of the tiny drawers has the name of a man and two dates, 1866 and 1878
This is lovely to display on a bookshelf
19 5/8 inches long by 10 1/4 inches wide by 8 inches tall
When it is open, it is 20 1/2” x 19 5/8”
The box is solid, and it does show wear on the exterior There are visible scuffs with some cracking to the lid. There likely was a brass plate with the owners initials on it. That is no longer present on the top. There is no key. There is some chipping to the veneer on the top, and the brass accents are scratched with loss of brass surface. There is veneer that is loose on the side with scratches to the side. On the inside there is where around the edge , and where to the leather. The top leather drawer is separating, only a small piece of leather still connects it and it is fragile. The inkwell has some chips around the top.
