This serene river and harbor scene exemplifies Hiroshige’s celebrated ability to convey atmosphere, distance, and daily life in Edo (present-day Tokyo).

The composition features the gently arched wooden bridge animated by pedestrians and porters, set against a tranquil expanse of water punctuated by fishing boats and tall masts. Subtle gradations of blue and sky tones reflect Hiroshige’s mastery of color and spatial depth, hallmarks of his most admired landscape prints.

An old Japanese collector’s label affixed to the upper corner identifies the artist and subject, a traditional practice seen on 19th-century prints that were later collected and framed. The signature visible within the image corresponds to Hiroshige’s known Edo-period inscriptions. Together with the paper tone, pigment quality, and wear consistent with age, this example is believed to date to the Edo period, circa 1830s–1850s.
