This really is a Very Nice Example of a Authentic Antique American Primitive Stoneware Spirits Jug. It is Not Marked as Such but it is a Small & Hard to Find 1 Gallon Storage Capacity Size. It is also Embossed - Signed by the Well Documented Maker HAXSTUN, OTTMAN & COMPANY in FORT EDWARD NEW YORK. Research also Indicates that This Mark Only Used From Approx 1862 to 1872. It is Rendered in a "Beehive" Form and it has a Classic American Salt Glaze Exterior. The Front of the Jug has a Exceptionally Nice Hand Decorated and Well Executed Cobalt Blue Bird Posing on a Branch Decoration. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms and Household's and They were Made - Intended For Everyday Utilitarian Use. In addition These Types of Stoneware Items were Completely Hand Made on a Potters Wheel Making Them Each One of a Kind. These Types of Jugs were Commonly Used to Store Liquids such as Ciders, Vinegar, Ales, Liquors & Spirits, Spring Water Etc. It is in Excellent All Original Condition and it Displays Beautifully. It has a Few Very Small Chips at the Spout area. It has Some Light Age and Use Acquired Glaze Color Variations. It also has a Couple Surface Glaze Spots and a Iron Ping Surface Chip and a Potters Scrape at the Base i=of the Birds Tail Area. These Types of Superficial Flaws are Quite Common in this These Type of Stoneware Pieces and Would Have Occurred in the Making - Kiln Firing Process. Stoneware Pieces Like This were Fired in Very Large Kilns with Many Other Pieces at the Same Time so These and Other Types of Kiln Flaws are Quite Common. There is a Very Faint - Micro Hairline Crack at the Handle Mid Section ( See Last Photograph in Listing ) but This Also Most Likely Occurred in the Making. It is in Strong - Sound and Perfectly Usable if so Desired.
