This antique Moroccan bronze Hanukkah menorah (hanukkiah) is designed as a traditional oil lamp and features an ornate pierced backplate with geometric and floral latticework, arched architectural motifs, and stylized bird figures at the top. Crafted in cast bronze with a gold gilt and naturally developed patina, the piece reflects North African Jewish ritual art, where Islamic architectural influences and intricate openwork designs were commonly incorporated. Along the lower edge is a row of eight small oil cups intended for wicks, with a raised central cup for the shamash, or helper light.
This form of hanukkiah is rooted in Mediterranean and North African traditions, with similar designs appearing from the 16th century onward and continuing to be produced in Morocco and Israel through the 19th and mid-20th centuries. Designed specifically for oil use rather than candles, the lamp references the original Hanukkah miracle involving olive oil. Bird motifs are traditionally associated with protection and divine presence, while the pierced backplate allows light to glow through the design when lit. A visually striking and culturally significant example of Jewish ceremonial folk art.
