Canova originally sculpted a pair of lions in larger scale for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII at St. Peter’s Basilica. This vintage reproduction piece dates from the early- to mid-20th century and would have been sold one of a pair for use as bookends. This single lion is heavy in weight and can serve a variety of decorative purposes, however, including as a single bookend, doorstop, paperweight, or a simply lustrous decorative object.
