Rare and highly evocative italian mid-century mirror, circa 1950s, attributed to gio ponti. A remarkable warehouse discovery, preserved for decades and never placed into use, this sculptural wall mirror exemplifies the refined elegance and poetic rigor of post-war italian design. The elongated shield-shaped form is framed by a slender brass profile, subtly patinated, and crowned by a delicately sculpted brass crest with an abstract, rhythmic motif. The decorative element recalls the sculptural sensitivity of gio ponti’s decorative language of the late 1940s and 1950s, where architecture, design, and ornament coexist in perfect balance.
the mirror glass retains its original surface, with a very light and even patina consistent with age, lending depth and softness to the reflection without compromising clarity. The proportions are particularly elegant and architectural, making this piece suitable both as a functional mirror and as a strong decorative statement. The reverse reveals original construction details: a cork backing, brass structural elements, and the original maker’s label reading “e. Müller – vetri / glas.” e. Müller was an italian glass producer active in the mid-20th century, known for high-quality mirror and glass production, often collaborating with designers and furnishing manufacturers during the post-war period. The bilingual label reflects the company’s historical context and export-oriented activity typical of the era. Also present is the original handwritten inventory sticker numbered “7706,” a period warehouse marking rather than a date, further supporting the mirror’s provenance as an untouched stock piece kept in storage for many years. According to archival practice, such numbering systems were commonly used by italian manufacturers and distributors in the 1940s–1950s. The mirror was found stored inside a small wooden protective case, where it remained closed and undisturbed for decades.
measurements: height: 65 cm width: 50 cm condition: very good vintage condition. Original glass with a very light, uniform patina consistent with age. Brass shows minor surface wear and soft oxidation, enhancing its authenticity. Structurally sound and complete. A rare and poetic example of italian mid-century design, combining sculptural brasswork, refined proportions, and historical integrity — a piece that speaks quietly yet decisively to collectors of gio ponti and post-war italian decorative arts. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
issues arising from misattribution
