This offering features a rare and perfectly matched pair of 18cm lobed bowls from Royal Tichelaar Makkum, the Netherlands' oldest ceramic manufacturer (est. 1572). These pieces are not merely decorative objects; they are a bridge to 450 years of Dutch ceramic history.
Design Heritage vs. Production Era
In the world of fine ceramics, these bowls represent a rare continuity of craft:
The Design (c. 1700–1850): The scalloped "Plooischotel" (lobed) form and the Polychrome floral motif are rooted in the Baroque and Rococo periods. This specific silhouette was originally designed to emulate the costly silverware of the Dutch Golden Age.
The Production (c. 1940–1960): These specific specimens were handcrafted in the mid-20th century using the same wooden molds and pounce-patterns used by the factory for centuries.
The Makkum "Identical" Matching
Finding two identical Makkum bowls in such close condition is highly desirable for interior designers. While each is hand-painted—making them unique upon close inspection—they are masterfully matched in color, scale, and composition, allowing for a symmetrical and balanced display.
Artisanal Craftsmanship: The Majolica Technique
Makkum is the only remaining factory that utilizes the authentic Frisian Majolica technique. Unlike modern "Delft" which is often mass-produced, these bowls were painted by a master artist directly onto a layer of wet, unfired tin glaze. This "in-glaze" method ensures the colors remain luminous and permanent, resulting in the famous "Makkum Glow."
Condition & Display
The pair is in excellent vintage condition. One bowl features a single, discreet micro-chip on the rim and minor glaze pinholes—characteristic of hand-fired artisanal pottery from the mid-century period. The glaze remains vibrant and high-gloss.
