19th Century French Aubusson tapestry, woven in France circa 1880 and inspired by celebrated 17th-century Flemish genre scenes. The richly detailed antique textile depicts a lively pastoral gathering with peasants seated around a table enjoying food, drink, and music, animated by charming narrative details and a harmonious palette of blues, greens, ochres, and soft reds. The composition is framed by an elegant floral and foliate border with scrolling corner motifs, characteristic of fine Aubusson workshop production of the period.
The scene is rendered in the manner of David Teniers the Younger (1610–1690), the renowned Flemish painter best known for his vivid depictions of peasant life, tavern interiors, and rustic celebrations. Teniers’ genre scenes were highly admired throughout Europe and frequently translated into tapestries during the 18th and 19th centuries for aristocratic and grand domestic interiors. This work reflects that tradition through its animated figures, convivial subject matter, and storytelling quality.
The antique tapestry is mounted in a substantial carved oak frame with a decorative crest centered at the top. The wall decor is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with strong color retention, making it an exceptional statement piece for a living room, dining room, gallery wall, or wine cellar.
