This elegant matched set of two antique oval portrait prints depicts George and Martha Washington, after original paintings by Gilbert Stuart. The legend on each image notes: painted by G. Stuart, published by John Damty (31 S. 6th Street, Philadelphia), and engraved by A. B. Walter—a combination that firmly places these prints within the early American Federal period.
Each portrait is housed in its original ebonized oval wood frame, featuring applied classical ornamentation and an inner beaded gilt liner. The prints are sepia-toned engravings, period-correct in style, and retain a wonderful historic presence ideal for traditional, Federal, Colonial Revival, or Americana interiors. Displayed together, they create a striking and historically resonant wall composition.
Estimated Date of Manufacture: Circa 1810–1830 (Early 19th Century) Based on the publisher’s Philadelphia address, engraving style, and frame construction.
