19th Century French Spelter Sculpture “Appel à la Danse” by Auguste Moreau
This outstanding late 19th-century French sculpture is a refined example of Art Nouveau–influenced decorative art, created by the celebrated sculptor Auguste Moreau. The work is titled “Appel à la Danse”, a poetic and expressive composition that embodies elegance, movement, and romantic symbolism.
The sculpture is executed in high-quality spelter and stands on a solid bronze base, lending both visual weight and durability. It is signed “Aug. Moreau” on the base, and features its original title plaque, mounted within a beautifully ornamented cartouche, confirming both authorship and authenticity.
Design & Artistic Execution
The figure depicts a joyful young woman in mid-motion, captured with exceptional sensitivity and craftsmanship:
Her flowing garments are finely cast, creating a sense of rhythm and movement
The hairstyle and facial expression are delicately modeled, conveying lightness and grace
In her left hand, she gathers her dress
In her right hand, she holds an oil lamp, symbolizing warmth and festivity
Rising between her legs is a sculpted rose bush, richly detailed with blossoms, adding balance and ornamental depth to the composition
The oil lamp reservoir is made of beautifully colored glass, providing an elegant contrast to the darker tones of the spelter figure. For display purposes, the lamp element can be carefully removed, allowing the sculpture to be presented either as a lighting figure or purely as a sculptural artwork.
